New Gambling Regulator Takes Charge in New South Wales

Posted on September 13, 2022 | 11:41 am

The government of New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, has announced that the Independent Casino Commission, the new regulator of gambling in this territory, has taken charge starting September 5.

The New South Wales Independent Casino Commission replaces the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) as the government body in charge of regulating gambling in the state.

The decision to create a new regulator in New South Wales came after the famous Bergin inquiry, which investigated Crown Resorts to see whether the operator was suitable to hold a casino license at Barangaroo in Sydney.

Kevin Anderson, the Minister for Hospitality and Racing in New South Wales, named the team that leads the Independent Casino Commission, which includes Philip Crawford, the former chair of the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority.

The minister stated that one of the most urgent tasks for the new regulator is to review the report into The Star and its suitability to hold a casino license in the state, along with the continued supervision of the activities of Crown Sydney.

A Warning For Casinos

After taking charge, the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission has warned casino operators in the state that they will face “very severe consequences” if they ever engage in shady practices.

The commission has a lot more powers than the previous regulator, both when it comes to monitoring casino activities and also when acting against operators who engage in money laundering or other lawless activities.

The new laws stipulate that casinos can face fines up to 100 million Australian dollars, while senior executives and board members of casino operators can now be held personally liable for any wrongdoings if it is proven that they didn’t act to stop them.

Philip Crawford, the Chief Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Casino Commission, has issued a warning to operators regarding the consequences of breaking the rules.

“We’re going to be a lot more vigilant and we’ll have many more tools to assist us in that process,” Crawford warned. “The ability of casinos to hide things from us, which they’ve actively done in recent years, will not be available to them.”
